neXt crashes when launching

Hi,

I purchased Next to see if it was better than AccuRC. I tried the demo a few months ago and it worked flawlessly, but two minutes is not really long enough to test.

When I double click on the Next icon to run it, it crashes with a message and to send the logs to Next Support. I couldn't find where to send them so thought the forum may be the place?

I have attached the zipped logs

The laptop is running windows 10 professional (1809) with Nvidia GTX960 graphics

I currently have it installed on an older laptop and it is working without issues.

Thanks for your help

Nigel

Hi Nigel,

please start the system program 'programs and functions' and uninstall both neXt installations there. Then install only the latest neXt which you can download from dl.next-sim.eu.

All the best,
Klaus

Thanks for the quick response Klaus,

I had previously uninstalled the previous version and downloaded the version I have installed Wednesday evening. I have also tried disabling anti-virus (avast) when installing. The version I downloaded the other day has installed and works fine on another laptop

I have re-downloaded the installer as per the address you gave, uninstalled neXt, rebooted, disabled anti-virus, re-installed neXt and still no luck :(

It looks like Avast is blocking the neXt during startup. The crash dump shows an access violation. So, you should configure your Avast accordingly.

I have tried that. Disabled avast, and also added an exception to not scan anything in the neXt directory.
I have attached the latest crash logs

when you have configured Avast, you should delete these folder: your documents/neXt/

when you start the system program 'programs and functions'... do you see there only one 'neXt'? If not, you should uninstall both installations and install only the latest version from https://www.cgm-online.com/rc-flight-sim...download_e.html

The folder doesn't exist. I have searched both hard drives for it.

There was only one installed copy of neXt. I have uninstalled and reinstalled with no luck

Then everything is o.k. when there is only one neXt listed in 'Programs and functions'.

You have no user folder? The path is 'C:\Users\ user name \Documents\neXt\'

This explains the access violation error message. If there is no Documents folder, the neXt cannot make the neXt folder there. The neXt saves there the preferences file: 'prefs.ini'.

The Documents folder does exist, but on my machines it defaults to D:\Users\<user>\Documents

I have copied the neXt folder from my desktop machine (another installation that works), but I still get the error.
Not sure if the program expects to find the folder path as C:\Users\<user>\Documents\neXt, I also created that structure, but still no luck.

As an aside, I work in IT as a Systems Engineer and also have 30+ years software development experience, so I do have a good understanding of troubleshooting.

My thoughts are that there may be something missing on my (newer) laptop that is there on my older desktop and laptop.

Please do not copy the neXt folder from an other computer. The neXt creates these folder during startup automatically. He cannot do this because the neXt gets blocked on your computer. That's why neXt exits with the access violation error message.

Is your Documents folder in the Microsoft Cloud? I have heard about these feature. It's working with neXt only while you have one computer which uses these Cloud function.

The documents folder is local and not in the cloud.

Currently my laptop does not have any anti-virus enabled and avast has been uninstalled. Incidentally, avast is installed on the two other machines that I have installed and run neXt successfully on. So we can rule out anti-virus being an issue

I have deleted the neXt folders I had created previously. Still no luck.

I have no idea why this is not working there. Must be specific to your configuration.

I have decided to keep digging and searching for a solution and tonight I found one!

Thanks to a thread on the Steam forum, where a user was having a similar issue I found my solution.

My laptop is used to connect into work via Citrix. It turns out that the Citrix Receiver and Citrix Workspace applications cause issues with the Unity game engine.

I uninstalled Citrix Workspace (which is the newer version of the Receiver) and neXt is now working :)

Further to my last post, I discovered that one of my other games that I play also uses the Unity engine and works perfectly fine with Citrix Workplace installed. This game is using a version of Unity from 2017, not V5.x that neXt is using.
